The origin of the birthstone

Babies born in April are blessed with one of the most popular and valuable stones available: the Diamond. But this amazing gemstone has left many to question:

  • Why does April get the diamond?
  • Where and when did birthstones originate?

These precious gems date back to the breastplate of Aaron ( details and explanations are pictured below)

Holy scripture: Aaron shall bear their names before the Lord, upon his two shoulders, for a memorial.... And Aaron shall bear the names of the Children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart, when he goeth in unto the Holy Place.' -- EXODUS xxviii.12,29.
Twelve precious stones were placed upon a square to form a breastplate attachment. Each stone, varying in color, was set into a gold socket and a tribe name was etched on each gem. It is unclear as to why a particular tribe was assigned to a specific stone, there are theories but no proof

In the present day, some have adorned the breastplate of Aaron in a modern fashionable way (see bracelet below). These stones have been directly linked to the birthstone selection.

There are also many legends that link specific powers and therapeutic abilities to the stones. It has been said throughout time that wearing a gemstone during the month it was assigned stimulates healing powers from within.

Why watchmakers use precious stones INSIDE luxury timepieces

To some, it may seem like it is a waste to use precious stones inside a watch. However, many are unaware that the gems used are generally synthetic rubies harvested and engineered specifically for this purpose. The main purpose of these gems is for watch movement components and friction resistant bearings.

Some of the reasons why stones are used inside a watch is because they are:
  • Small
  • Strong
  • Lightweight
  • Durable
  • Resistant to wear
  • Stable in various temperatures
  • Without decay
  • Hard to break

The synthetic rubies are created by a formula composed of aluminum and chromium oxide. The engineering consists of a crystallizing process that is comprised of a series of heating, fusing and cooling technology. These stones are generally mass produced and therefore not considered to be in the same valuable category as a "precious gem".

These stones are added to many different styles and types of watches. The total amount of stones found inside the timepiece can vary, as it is specific to the mechanical movements and complexity of the piece. The best rule of thumb: the more that the insides move, the more rubies will be used. A typical fully-jeweled piece contains approximately 17 gems, however others can contain many more than that.

Luxury timepieces: Cotes de Genève striped finishing

The market for luxury timepieces is still very much alive and well.

Reputable watchmakers take their time crafting not only the exterior design, but the inner features of these collectible bands. Although digital technology is stealing the media spotlight with buzz everything from weather indicators to your heart rate monitors, the old style wristwatch is making a comeback.

Let's look at one of the most prestigious features:  Cotes de Genève striped  finishing.

Depending upon the brand name, it is also known by the names " Genève stripes" or "rayonnantes".  This is one of the most popular and well known finishing on movements crafted by some of the most elite in the industry.

The pattern is etched on the smooth surfaces of the base plate or other parts that resemble stripes. it is in fact a set of stripes that form in a pattern, but the composition consists of mini angled scratches in a very systematic way.

Spring Trending Colors- Pantone's Inspiration

Spring has moved toward softer and more subtle hues. As we move into the next season, expect to see understated bright and pale pastels combined with natural neutral tones. Inspiration for the Spring lines have been derived from tropical oasis themes and lush landscapes. You can also come to expect understated hues, images and patterns derived from folklore artwork and abstract soft floral designs with hints of blues including teal and aquamarine.

The 2015 tending color board, as reported by Pantone:

Escaping from the sharp harsh winter and diving into the soft embrace of Spring with warm colors. This seems to be the main thread found throughout the fashion industry, branching out to jewelry lines and even home decor.

Hamilton Jewelers, has paired these beautiful colors with our very own designer collection. Click here to learn more about our fine jewelry and browse our inventory.

The origin of the expression "Luck of the Irish"

Where did the expression "Luck of the Irish" come from?
This expression is generally associated with good fortune and linked to the Irish. However, you may be surprised to find out that this phrase was born in here in America. It has been determined by a number of historians that throughout the gold and silver rush (sometime into the 19th century), many miners were of Irish American decent. Their positive mining experiences and undeniable fortunes were immediately associated with "luck". Over the course of time, the expression "luck of the Irish" (miners) became a common expression used in everyday diction.
