Understanding the Difference Between Automatic and Hand-Winding Mechanical Watches

Often we get questions from customers about mechanical watches. Generally, they’d like to understand the difference between mechanical self-winding watches and hand-winding watches. Here, we explain the difference in simple terms…

A mechanical watch is made of hundreds of tiny parts that work together without using batteries (as in quartz watches) or without use of solar power. The mechanical components power the watch and track the time (and often a lot more than just the time).

Hand-Winding Mechanicals

Essentially, a hand-wound — also sometimes referred to as a manual-wind watch — is a timepiece that has an inner movement that must be wound by the wearer on a regular basis. The watch is generally wound via the crown in a singular direction to wind the inner spring and power the watch. As the crown is turned, it sets a small dance into motion thanks to a complicated system of gears that slowly transmit the energy from the crown to a main spring that is coiled inside a barrel. When the crown won’t turn any longer, the spring is fully wound. It then slowly starts to unwind, releasing power to the watch via another series of gears and wheels, including a main balance wheel that helps to regulate the release of energy for consistent timekeeping. If the wearer forgets to wind the watch, the energy runs out and the watch stops working until it is set and wound again.

Automatic/Self-Winding Mechanicals

In an automatic watch — also referred to as a self-winding watch — the movement is built differently than that of a hand-wound watch. It consists of a “rotor” or “oscillator” that is powered by the movement of the wearer’s wrist. As the wrist moves, it automatically moves the rotor, which, as it swings, winds the mainspring inside its barrel. The power lasts for a specified amount of time (referred to as power reserve) if the watch is not being worn, but as long as the watch is worn, it will continually wind itself. Stop in any time to check out our wonderful array of mechanical watches.

Peridot: August’s Birthstone

IMG_7595 (Edited Version)

Peridot, August’s birthstone.

The ancient Egyptians mined peridot on the Red Sea island of Zabargad, the source for many large fine peridots in the world’s museums. The Egyptians called it the “gem of the sun.” Today this gem is still prized for its restful yellowish green hues and long history.

Ceramic: The Perfect Watch Material for Summer

As more and more watch brands delve into the realm of high-tech materials for watch cases and bracelets, we are witnessing a host of wonderful new ceramic watches emerge on the market. However, not all ceramics are the same. High-tech engineered ceramic is one of the hardest and most scratch-resistant materials for watches. The cases and bracelets — as long as the watch is water resistant — can get wet without any impact, as the material is durable. As such, this is a great material for summertime watches because they can weather the elements and go the distance.

Additionally, ceramic is a very lightweight material, so the watch doesn’t feel heavy on the wrist. It also is temperature resistant and won’t stick to the wrist in humid climates the way a leather strap would.

Properly engineered ceramic is typically a blend of oxides, carbides, nitrates and zirconium that are mixed, compressed and heated to offer a great polished look that disguises its rugged factors. Because of the luster of ceramic, it also looks great on the wrist so a sporty watch can take on a more urban chic elegant tone, as well.

The first engineered ceramic watches were introduced in the mid-1980s by Swiss watch brand Rado. It took some time before other brands made their foray into ceramic, but in the past years, it has become all the rage. Typically, ceramic for watches is white or black, but some brands are finally experimenting with adding color for gray, brown or even bold red.

Why Does My Mechanical Watch Need to Be Serviced?

Just like your car needs regular maintenance, so, too, does your fine mechanical watch. Let’s face it, it is comprised of hundreds of tiny mechanical parts, as well as lubricants that — if they get old, dry or sticky — can affect the way your watch performs.

How often a watch should be serviced is the real question… and the answer varies depending on the age of the watch, the brand and the movement inside. Today’s mechanical watches do not necessarily need servicing as often as older watches because today’s haute horology watches often have silicon parts inside, or ceramic ball bearings or other components that reduce friction and wear and tear. Generally, we suggest that new watches be serviced at least every five to seven years.

Similarly, if you have a watch you bought more than a decade ago, it should also be serviced every five years at minimum to keep it running smoothly. Other vintage watches (generally watches made before 1985) need more frequent servicing. Our suggestion is once every three or four years.

Essentially, full servicing of a watch entails removing the case back, disassembling the movement, cleaning of the components and then a reassembling of the movement with all new lubricants. All new gaskets are also added to the watch and a final testing is done to ensure it is fully water resistant and in prefect running order.  Because full servicing can be time consuming, we do ask our customers to be patient, but we will keep you apprised every step of the way. If you are unsure if your watch needs to be serviced or not, stop in any time to discuss it with us.

Grads and Dads: Finding the Perfect Watch for the Men in Your Life

College graduations are in full swing and Father’s Day is around the corner, so it’s time to give thought to the perfect gift for your brilliant son, top-notch father or wonderful husband. We have the answer: a gift of time in the form of a watch on the wrist.

Today, time is omnipresent on our cell phones, dashboards, computers and more, but that is precisely what makes a watch so special.  Every time he glances at his wrist he will be reminded of the fact that you cared enough to give him a statement that offers time and distinction. The cell phone just can’t make the individual and personal statement that a watch can make. A timeless gift, a watch also shows that you took the time to consider his likes, hobbies and interests. Not sure what type of watch to get? Here, we bring you four important factors to consider when buying a watch.

Consider Your Budget. It is important to note that there is a watch to fit every wallet size. From affordable to over the top, there is great variety on the market. Before you even consider which watch, though, have a budget in mind. It’s OK to deviate from that budget a little, but starting with a budget puts you at ease with the process of selection. Have an opening price in mind, and a cap off price, and don’t be afraid to tell the sales associate helping you in the store where your budget lies.

Buy from a reputable, authorized retailer. This will bring you peace of mind that the watch is covered under warranty or guarantee, and that if the recipient wants to exchange it, that won’t be a problem.

Think about the person you are buying for. What are his hobbies or interests? Is he a sports enthusiast who may like a chronograph, a car lover who may like a watch with auto-inspired detailing. Does he dive, or swim, or sail? There is a watch genre for every type of sport, even camping, hiking and running. Also, think about the person’s age or career path.  If you’re buying for a graduate, a nice clean stylish watch with a sporty, chic appeal that can go from work to weekend is a great choice. Buying for the father of your children? He may want something more sophisticated or complex, especially if he already owns some watches.

Think about where the person lives. Some watches may be better suited to certain climates than others, thanks to the strap or bracelet. For instance, warmer climates are great for bracelets so the strap doesn’t get clammy or sticky on the wrist. Cooler climates are great for leather straps, where metal could feel cold. Water lovers may want a rubber strap that can easily get wet time and again.

Still not sure? No problem. Stop in any time and let our knowledgeable staff help you work out the answers and find the perfect gift of time for the grad or dad in your life.

Luxury Watches for Active Lifestyles

Many of us lead adventurous, active lifestyles alongside our work lives. That’s why we know that sometimes, you need a sleek, dependable watch that can hold up outside the boardroom. Luxury doesn’t have to mean fragile. Here, we’ll go over the best durable, luxury watch options for those with active lifestyles. From the marathon-running executive to the deep sea-diving consultant, we’ve got you covered.

Tough watches for altitude aficionadosImage 1

For those of you who like to take to the skies, an altitude-friendly watch is a must. No matter if you’re a pilot, a skydiver or a paraglider, it’s crucial to have a watch that functions at its optimal level even at optimal heights.

For those practicing air sports, it’s also important to choose a watch with all-around durability. Pilot’s watches are often considered to be the epitome of style, but before becoming style icons, their origins were in durability. Watches for altitude seekers need to be strong enough to resist quick changes in altitude.

Style and durability can indeed go hand in hand: that’s why we recommend our IWC Big Pilot watch. It’s perfect for both high altitude and high society.

Durable luxury watches for water enthusiasts

While not all water sports are alike, they all involve one important element when it comes to choosing a watch: water resistance. Luxurious, water-tough watches are perfect for sailors, scuba divers, snorkelers and swimmers.

For those of you whose adventures take us to shallower waters – i.e., swimming or scuba diving – we suggest that you opt for a watch with 50 to 100 meters of resistance. However, if you’re looking for a watch that can swim with you to the depths of the sea, water resistance is more important. You’ll want to choose a watch with more than 200 meters of resistance.

If you’re looking to learn more about deep-sea strength watches, we also have a more in-depth blog post about understanding the key functions of a divers watch. For your watch options, we carry the Victorinox Swiss Army I.N.O.X. Professional Diver Model, which is an excellent option for divers who want to explore in style.

Sport-strong luxury watchesImage 1

While some adventures take you to high heights or to the deep ocean, we know that many of you need a watch that can stick with you through expeditions right here on land. For those of you who are mountaineers, climbers, runners or skiers, you’ll want to choose a watch that scores high in all-around durability. This means that the watch should be water-resistant, lightweight and will continue to thrive in extremely low temperatures. It should also be shock-proof and, ideally, look sleek enough to transition from the mountain to haute couture.

For all-around athletes, we recommend our G-Shock MTG-S1000V-1A watch. It’s durable, water resistant to 200 meters, and is guaranteed to keep you looking stylish.

If you’re looking to adventure in style, Hamilton Jewelers has your back. We invite you to browse our selection of durable, luxury watches – either via our website, in-store or in one of our locations.

Mother’s Day Gifting

Let’s face it: Being a mom is a pretty tough job. Think of everything that you’ve put her through over the years. First, the late-night feedings and never-ending conveyor belt of diapers. Then, the tantrums, spills and relentless whys. Let’s just not mention the teenage years. Through it all, she’s been there for you, guiding, teaching and helping you become the person you are today. What does she receive every year as thanks for this all-consuming job that she’s had? A $5 greeting card and maybe, if she’s lucky, a phone call. Don’t you think she deserves a bit more?

It’s not that she just deserves more, though. It’s that she deserves something good! That being said, we present some good and bad gift ideas for Mother’s Day.

Here are a few options to stay away from if you’re looking to impress, not distress, your mother:

  • Home goods. This includes vacuums, kitchen items, clothing irons or anything else that might remind her of the household work that she has to deal with on a daily basis. This is her day to relax, unwind and forget about all of those chores. If your mom is a coffee fanatic and you get her a nice espresso machine, you can make an exception. For the most part, stay away from the entire category!
  • Electronics. Unless your mother is a passionate technophile, stay away from electronics. It’s supposed to be a day of warmth and caring. A new TV just doesn’t fit the bill.
  • The same gift you got her last year. Show some initiative! I’m sure she didn’t give you the same gift card every year on your birthday growing up. Make it personal and thoughtful.

So now that you know what not to get, the elephant in the room is what do you get her? Whatever it is, tailor it to your mother’s interests and likes. Being thoughtful and considerate is the most important part, so if you get that right, she’ll enjoy whatever she receives. Here are some of our suggestions to get you on the right track:

  • A spa day. Your mom deserves at least one day of being pampered each year. This is the perfect opportunity to ensure that it happens.
  • Flowers. This is a classic Mother’s Day gift for a reason. A beautiful bouquet of your mom’s favorite flowers is sure to bring a smile to her face. Pair it with this exquisite crystal vase from Hamilton Jewelers to really up the wow factor.
  • Jewelry. We here at Hamilton Jewelers have got you covered, no matter what type of pieces your mother enjoys. Here is a collection of our best gifting ideas for the special day. Whether she’s into necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, watches or specialized decorative pieces, we have a plethora of fantastic options that will have her feeling loved and appreciated.

So please show your mom some gratitude this Mother’s Day. Show her thanks for all of the skinned knees she’s tended to, the hurt feelings she’s helped repair and the countless hours she’s spent helping you grow into an independent adult. She deserves more than one day. She certainly deserves more than a card.

How to Spice Up Your Wardrobe With the Pantone Colors of Summer 2018

pantonevioletyellow_preview

With Meadowlark Yellow and Ultra Violet leading the color trends for 2018, according to the Pantone Color Institute, we have seen an interesting resurgence of yellow and blue/purple this year on the runways and on the wrists.

Each season, we strive to introduce the emerging colors so watch lovers — especially those who have watches with interchangeable strap systems — can be on the mark when they spice up their timepieces and clothing.

pantonesummer2_preview

With summer not too far off, though, we are struggling because the season’s colors are — frankly — all across the board. Black remains part of the palette, used mostly as an accent color, and white is almost a staple (no surprises there). As for the hues of the season, they range from taupes, tans and dusty olives, to the bolder and more vibrant Blueberry, Poppy Red and Jolly Green. Festive shades of purple, yellow and blue also play an important role, as do the muted pale versions of the bolder siblings, with Pastel Yellow, Baby Blue and Florida Keys teal making a strong appearance.

pantonesummer3_preview

When it comes to how this translates into your wardrobe, our best advice is to add a little color — any color — to spice up your days and nights. If you own a white strapped watch, put it on. Similarly, if you are one of those who own today’s great blue, green or brown dial colors — don’t be afraid to wear it. Don’t think you have to wear a blue suit with a blue dial watch. Mix it up a bit and try that blue watch with a brown suit — or vice versa. This summer is going to be all about sporting contrasting colors.

You Have the Perfect Ring, Now What?

Your fiancé gave you the perfect engagement ring, and now you have your matching wedding band for a beautiful, enduring expression of your love. It sparkles like your personality, and looks flawless on your finger.

Now, it’s time to complete your bridal appearance with the trifecta: a stunning pair of earrings, an attractive necklace and an accessory. Here are a few fantastic options that will help you feel and look your best on the most wonderful day of your life.

Earrings

Your earrings will frame your face, so they are the best place to start – especially if you choose to wear your hair up. There are many different choices of earrings that can fit whatever look you have chosen to go with.

Necklace

Now that your ears are taken care of, you should think about what type of neck adornment works well with your earrings. Although especially important for those going with a strapless dress, every bride could use a beautiful necklace. As you examine options, visualize yourself walking down the aisle and wearing your favorite piece.

Five diamonds means five times more hushed whispers exclaiming “How magnificent!” with this exquisite 18k gold necklace. Each diamond in the necklace is joined to the next with platinum rings; the laser technology used to join the diamonds means that there is minimal metal backing, allowing the full vibrancy and brilliance of the diamonds to shine.

Shine like the heavens with Hamilton’s Celestial 18k gold and diamond necklace. It features over 2 carats of diamonds spread extravagantly across the neckline, with five large gems taking center stage. This necklace pairs well with a semi-sweetheart or off-shoulder neck, and is designed to match the Celestial earrings listed above.

Other accessories

Earrings and necklaces are two of the most important “non-ring” pieces that you will be wearing, but that does not mean you cannot accessorize further if you feel the need. We recommend utilizing bracelets to put the finishing touch on a mesmerizing bridal look. Whether you prefer the more ornate style of this arabesque cuff bracelet, the classic style of this gold loop bangle bracelet or the contemporary glamour of this gold and diamond bracelet, we are sure that you can find something that ties everything together perfectly.

Now you have a good starting point for creating a bridal ensemble that is as lovely as you are. It all comes down to your personal preference, but if you all of your pieces fit together well, you can create a look that’s truly special.

Planning to Be in New York This Month? Visit the Medieval Time Exhibit at the Morgan

An exciting exhibit about telling time in Medieval days is on display until April 29 at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York, and if you are in town, you won’t want to miss it. Entitled Now and Forever: The Art of Medieval Time, the exhibit portrays how difficult it was to tell time — and the myths about time — in the Middle Ages.

The exhibit is a comprehensive look at pieces and manuscripts owned by the Morgan that date back from the 11th century and through the 16th century. Most pieces hail from major countries in Europe. Highlights include paintings of farming fields (done according to the projected season), or of sacred feasts (of time and of religion) to celebrate certain anticipated dates. Other items include a long scroll work that explores the mysteries of Golden Numbers, a medieval calendar and a study of how Julius Caesar’s Roman Calendar finally came into being. A particularly unusual aspect of the exhibit revolves around how people of the time were obsessed with whether or not time beyond the grave existed.

Wall hangings include ancient wooden astrolabes and an entire 60-foot-long scroll manuscript depicting history as they knew it. In all, it is a fascinating walk through five centuries when time was viewed as seasons and as moons rather than as days, hours or even minutes. If you are in New York any time in the next 10 days, we recommend stopping in to the exhibit.

Simply brilliant: The boyfriend’s guide to choosing an engagement diamond shape

So you’ve found the girl of your dreams, and you’re ready to “put a ring on it.” You thought all the decisions were behind you, right? Not so much! There’s still that all-important engagement diamond to pick out. You want to create a ring that expresses your love and commitment, but is also a reflection of your bride-to-be’s unique personality and style. It’s a tall order, but this quick primer will break down the basics on selecting the centerpiece stone of this ring of a lifetime.

It all starts with the shape

You have probably heard that when it comes to diamonds, it’s all about the “four Cs.” Gemologists have co-opted the alphabet’s third letter to remind you of the critical characteristics of the diamond: cut, color, clarity and carat. All four of those are important. But there is a fifth “C”, and it is more critical than the rest: Confidence. Make sure you are working with a jeweler who has extensive experience with diamonds and engagement rings and is accredited with the Gemological Institute of America and American Gem Society.

Once you have found a jeweler you can be confident in, the first decision they will likely ask you to make is the shape of your stone. Here, we’ll take a look at the five most popular diamond shapes to help you decide which one will make the cut when it comes to your bride.

  • Round

If you’re not sure where to start with your stone, begin by looking at round shapes. According to Brides magazine, more than half of all brides surveyed wear a round diamond. A traditional choice, this is a popular selection not only due to its timelessness, but also because the round shape maximizes the diamond’s sparkle when it catches the light. In fact, round brilliant diamonds make up ¾ of all diamond purchases, so if your bride is the classic type and likes simple elegance, this may well be your ticket.

She loves monograms, Barbour jackets, and handwritten notes. Even when she’s wearing jeans and loafers, she always looks put together. Her sense of style is evergreen – just like your love. She’s a Round.

  • Princess

First created in 1980, this square shape is the most popular of the “fancy cut” shapes, maybe because it makes a woman feel like the eponymous member of royalty. It offers a modern, metropolitan take on the classic stone, and like the round diamond, makes a highly flexible centerpiece to any setting.

Her outfits are a funky blend of today’s designers and vintage pieces she’s found out thrifting. She reads the New York Times cover to cover every Sunday – on her iPad. Her style transcends time, just like your relationship. She’s a Square.

  • Cushion

Though this shape that blends a square cut with rounded corners has been around for more than 200 years, it has enjoyed a recent resurgence in popularity after having been seen on the big screen as the ring on Daisy Buchanan’s finger in 2013’s “The Great Gatsby.” A stone in this shape offers a vibe that’s both glamorous and distinctive, reaching into the past but with a modern spark of brilliance.

She’s always seen with that one handbag she carries, and you can bet it’s vintage Hermès – it’s her statement piece. It’s her outfits that all her friends oooh and aaah over … she’s truly a tastemaker. One thing’s for certain: This woman is truly unforgettable. She’s a Cushion.

  • Asscher

Similar to the cushion, this is a centuries-old shape that has regained a great deal of popularity in recent years. Unlike the cushion, however, this cut’s return to the limelight didn’t come as a result of a movie appearance: The Asscher got an upgrade around the turn of the millennium with significant improvements, which in turn led to it being the first-ever diamond shape to be patented. The choice of Hollywood idols from Elizabeth Taylor to Gwyneth Paltrow, this shape calls to mind the Art Deco look of the rectangular emerald cut, but with more facets for increased sparkle and shine.

You know when it’s September because she’s curled up with the extra-thick issues of all her favorite fashion magazines, soaking up every trend- those she hasn’t already unearthed on Instagram, because your bride-to-be is nothing if not an #influencer. She turns heads, she makes marks, she takes names … she’s an Asscher.

  • Emerald

This shape is comprised of a rectangle with cropped corners and a relatively large, flat face that produces a hall of mirrors effect (don’t be confused by the fancy talk; it’s just what it sounds like). Since flaws inside the stone (“inclusions,” in jeweler-speak) will be easier to see in this sleek and elegant shape, clarity is prized over sparkle here.

She’s all clean lines and angles, with a style that’s as understated as her practical approach to life. She loves Frank Lloyd Wright, and her favorite handbag is a late-1990s Kate Spade nylon shopper. She’s no-nonsense and straightforward, and you can’t wait to make her yours. She’s an Emerald.

So, gentlemen, there’s a look at the five most popular shapes. If you don’t see your love reflected in that lot, don’t worry, we have more. You can also choose from marquise (more bling for the buck); oval (sparkles like a round, but with a little unexpected edge thrown in); radiant (a stunner with tons of facets to catch the light – hence the name); pear or teardrop (a hybrid of oval and marquise, great for delicate brides); and heart (sweet and sentimental).

As you can see, there’s truly a special diamond out there for every bride. As your family-owned jeweler, we’d love the opportunity to be your partner in the design process, and put over a century of experience in crafting exquisite heirlooms to work shaping a one-of-a-kind masterpiece just for your bride. Drop by and see us, and you’ll find our team offers not only the personalized service you expect from Hamilton Jewelers – because this process is too important to entrust to just anyone – but also the international resources you need to uncover that one perfect stone.

After all, you’ve already made one of the most difficult decisions of your life. Let us help you with this next one!

Here Are the Top Three Takeaways From Baselworld 2018

BaselWorldEntrance

It is the biggest luxury jewelry and watch show of the year: Baselworld. The show recently closed its doors after a six-day event that proved highly successful. Retailers, consumer and journalists from around the world converged on Baselworld to see the newest, latest and greatest timepieces make their debuts. In most cases, these watches were years in the design, development and research stages. While they are hot off the presses, so to speak, the newest watches won’t make their way to stores for at least another month or so, but that doesn’t stop us from doing some trend spotting. Here are three key takeaways from Baselworld 2018.

We can’t say it enough. The biggest trend this year revolves around recalling our past. Many watch brands dug into their archives and developed watches based on an earlier, mid-20th-century watch that held some special meaning or appeal. While some brands re-interpreted designs of yesteryear by updating materials, colors, or dials, others unveiled almost literal reproductions of an early iconic watch. Some brands are even celebrating key anniversaries (50th, 60th, 75th) and releasing models in celebration.

Key vintage trends revolve around dial colors, with parchment, silver and lacquered white dials for many classic timepieces. However, also rearing their retro heads are blue and black dials — especially when combined with taupe numerals — as well as salmon or pink-hued dials. Another vintage trend has to do with numerals, markers and hands, with many brands adding Super-LumiNova and returning to classic fonts and hand styles. Lastly, elongated lugs are reappearing on the market — demonstrating a retro look and an ergonomic fit.

While some key luxury brands continue to unveil high complications and complex novelties, many of the big-name brands favored more useful complexities this year. Such functions include dive watches, calendar watches and even chronographs. However, the most important function, it seems, is the GMT watch. Simply put, a GMT watch features  a 24-hour format hand that indicates a second time zone in very easy terms.  This year’s favorite GMT watches are in chocolate brown, forest green, slate gray and ivory dial colors, in addition to the beloved blue.

As always, sport watches are an important category this year from both an aesthetic and function perspective. Classic sport watches and rugged sport watches dominate the scene, always with an eye toward design. On the classic sport side, many brands are inspired by the automobile racing world, with elements of the watch reminiscent of steering wheels, engines and grills. Even straps recall the sport, thanks to perforated holes that resemble leather driving gloves.

On the rugged and durable sport watch side, the sky  — or the sea — is the limit. Most popular this year are the dive watches, with many brands unveiling timepieces ready to weather the saltwater and harsh temperatures and depths inherent in diving. Some pilot watches emerge, as well, but these are taking a slight backseat to the more active sports, such as diving and mountain climbing. Key features in the newest sport watches include the use of a wide variety of materials for the case, ranging from high-tech ceramic and carbon fiber to the much-coveted alternative metals, such as bronze and even tantalum.

As mentioned, each of these trends is important in today’s active lifestyles, where form and function come together to deliver a timepiece that does much more than just tell the time. We will have the newest watches of 2018 arriving in stores beginning next month, and invite you to stop in any time to see them.

Three Important Watch Trends Already Spotted at Baselworld

The Baselworld Fair just opened, and already we are seeing key trends emerge, including an emphasize on interchangeable watch straps, the introduction of new materials and a general downsizing of case sizes for men and women.

Interchangeability and versatility. As witnessed already at SIHH, watch brands are recognizing that consumers today like choice. As such, we expect to see a lot more brands offering interchangeable watch straps — with new methods for easy-click changeability and with grand diversity of leathers, metal bracelets, finishes and colors.

Continued use of new materials. While gold, steel and titanium remain the staple of watchmaking, we continue to see an evolution of new materials. Our favorite is the use of bronze because it develops its own patina over time, making the watchcase unique to its owners. On the flip side is the innovative use of sapphire, with more sapphire box cases being unveiled at the high-end of the spectrum, allowing for ultimate visibility of the movement, and with some brands unveiling new colors of sapphire. Additionally, certain cutting-edge brands are unveiling new alloys and new colors of alloys that bring an edginess to the timepiece.

Smaller case sizes. While the much-loved 44mm size for men and 36mm size for women will never go away, this year we are seeing a reduction in case sizes. For women, these reductions mean a emergence of “mini” cases (24mm) from couture brands, as well as from fashion-forward brands, and of 32mm and 34mm sizes that sit nicely on a thinner wrist. For men, 38mm sizes in a classic watch are beginning to populate the offerings. For comparison’s sake, a US quarter measures about 24mm.

The Biggest Watch Show of the Year Kicks Off Next Week in Switzerland

The first few months of every year are filled with so many events in the watch world, starting in January with the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) exhibition in Geneva and then running into the biggest watch show of the year, Baselworld, in Basel, Switzerland. This year, the Baselworld Fair official opens on Thursday, March 22, with pre-show events taking place on the 21st. The show runs through March 27.

This show is important for many reasons. To begin with, this is where the majority of watch brands — from Patek Philippe to Rolex — unveil their newest timepieces, watches destined to set the wrist trends for the coming year. During Baselworld, thousands of new timepieces are shown, many of which will start to make their way to stores later this summer and fall. This is where the trends are set, this is where the new materials in watchmaking are unveiled and this is where brands, retailers and even customers congregate to get the newest info on time and timekeeping.

About 800 brands will exhibit at the show. This list includes big name brands, niche brands, dozens of top independent watch brands and even some top jewelry brands. Additionally, around the city of Basel, another 30 or so brands are showcasing their new timepieces for those adventurous enough to step outside the show’s cavernous halls.

We anticipate that this year’s Baselworld exhibition will bring us some great new trends and directions for the coming year, and will keep you posted with more news and information very soon.

March Birthstone

The serenely colored aquamarine invokes the tranquility of its namesake, the sea. In fact, the name aquamarine is derived from the Latin word aqua, meaning water, and marina, meaning the sea.

Aquamarine is most often light in tone and ranges from greenish blue to blue-green; the color usually is more intense in larger stones, and darker blue stones are very valuable. This gemstone is mined mainly in Brazil, but also is found in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, and Mozambique.

Like emeralds, this gemstone is actually a variety of a mineral called beryl. Large stones have been found all over the world, including one stone found in Brazil that weighed over 240 pounds. Aquamarine grows in large, six-sided crystals that can be up to a foot long, making it a great gem to be cut and polished in larger carats for statement pieces.

Not only is aquamarine one of the March birthstones, it’s also used to celebrate 19th wedding anniversaries. It’s a beautiful stone with little or no yellow in it, so it looks great in many settings with different colored metals and gemstones.

Ask the Experts, Our Engagament Ring Guide!

You’ve found the one, and you owe cupid a huge favor.  Maybe you’ve even planned the proposal or you’re working on some spectacular ideas.  No matter what your circumstances, buying an engagement ring can be a daunting and overwhelming task.  Here are some pointers to get you started in the right direction — some practical, some romantic, and some steeped in history and tradition.  We should know a thing or two…we’ve been helping happy couples for over 105 years!

The Top 3 Things to Know Before You Start This Amazing Adventure:

  • What is your budget?

You don’t need the exact number, but have a range in mind, be it monthly payments on an installment program, financing the entire purchase, or any combination of either.  You may be pleasantly surprised that financing offers now allow you to find the perfect ring for less than you may have imagined.

  • What setting is best?

While there are an unending variety of patterns, details, and metal choices, there are four basic types you are likely to encounter:

DER750380_0

Solitaire- A single stone.  Still the most popular choice in engagement rings.

DEF10820_0

Three Stone- Best described as ‘One diamond for the past, one for the present, and one for the future.’

DER11258_0

Sidestone- Diamonds or other gemstones flank the main stone for additional sparkle or color.

DER11262_0

Vintage Inspired- Designs that are vintage inspired often have halo settings and filigree details to further enhance the ring.

  • What is her style/taste?

What kind of jewelry does she already wear?  Is she more classic or modern?  Feminine or sophisticated?  Do her pieces tend to be more delicate or chunky?  Simple or ornate?  Observe her demeanor, her body language, her dress, and any references she makes about jewelry, fashion, and style.  She will be wearing this ring every day of her life.

And yes, the 4 C’s are really important…

You don’t need to obtain a gemology degree, but you should have a basic understanding of what contributes to a diamond’s value and appearance.  And as fundamental as it sounds, there IS a fifth “C”…Confidence in your jeweler.  Ask for referrals — be sure you’re buying from a reputable jeweler who is a member of either the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the American Gem Society (AGS).

Carat

The concept her is straightforward:  Carat refers to the weight of a diamond. However, there’s no need to focus solely up on the carat weight number. Through proper mounting and shaping, a master jeweler can make a diamond appear larger than its carat weight might suggest, while also bringing out its maximum brilliance.

Clarity

Evaluators of diamonds base part of the value on luster and sheen. These relate to the clarity of the stone. You can spend less on a very large but cloudy diamond for example, than on a small but transparent and shiny one. The important thing to bear in mind, however, is that the less flaws visible to the naked eye, the more valuable the stone.

Cut

A good cut determines the amount of light that can enter into the stone, refract, and emit that brilliant quality that people love in a diamond. Cut doesn’t refer to the shape of the diamond, but rather the angles and proportions of the stone. While nature determines the other three C’s, the diamond’s cut is determined by a cutter. A well cut diamond refl ects light from one facet to another and projects the light through the top of the stone… giving a diamond its sparkle. Out of all the four C’s, cut is the most important. Even if you have the perfect color, clarity, and carat, if the cut isn’t right, the diamond won’t have that fiery brilliance that your fiancé willbe proud to show the world.

Color

To the surprise of many people, diamonds come in a variety of colors. Diamond color is graded on a scale that ranges from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). Truly colorless diamonds are the rarest,  most exquisite.

Breguet and Panerai Celebrate the Chinese New Year With ‘Year of the Dog’ Watches

Happy Chinese New Year! This Friday, February 16, marks the start of the Year of the Dog, the 11th sign in the Chinese Zodiac. To mark this momentous occasion, the master artisans at Breguet and Panerai have created limited-edition dog-themed watches.

dog3

The dog embodies certain important traits that include loyalty, bravery, honesty and devoted attention. The dog is smart and incredibly lively. These are the features that Breguet hoped to interpret in their new timepiece: the Breguet Classic 7145 Chow Chow watch. Powered by a mechanical movement that can be viewed through the sapphire caseback, the Classic 7145 watch features the dog in the center of the dial, happily stealing the show. The fully engraved white gold dog sits atop some coins and is set against a hand guilloché dial. The detailing of the dog on the dial requires hundreds of hours of engraving work, as well as dozens of hours creating the guilloché ivory background. Just eight pieces will be made.

Another brand we carry here, Panerai, has unveiled a Year of the Dog watch in the form of a fully engraved and pierced hinged-cover on the Panerai Luminor 1950 Sealand 3 Days Automatic Acciao watch. The cover opens to reveal the dial beneath, but it is on the cover where the gold-and-black engraved and lacquered dog sits in majesty against a plum-flower background. Panerai will produce 88 pieces of this watch.

3 Tips for Finding the Right Watch for Her on Valentine’s Day

OK, men, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and you want to be on top of your game for that special woman in your life, be it a wife, a girlfriend or mom. While flowers are beautiful, they are so cliché — besides they die in a few days. Chocolates are sweet, too, but who isn’t trying to watch their weight these days? Dinner — yes, romantic for a night. However, we suggest you look to give her something much more meaningful and long lasting: give the gift of time.

A watch makes a perfect gift. It says you care and that you took time to find the right timepiece for her. What’s’ more, it will last so much longer than all those other things — and as long as your love (Well, some watches might need a new battery if they are quartz, but you can stay on top of that five years down the road). Additionally, there is a watch for any budget. Here we bring you three tips for buying the right gift this year:

Think about the colors she loves. Watches come with all sorts of stunning straps, with vibrant hues, pastels and neutrals. Unsure of her favorite color? You can’t go wrong with red or pink on Valentine’s Day.

Think about those flowers you were considering. Certain watches have stunning floral motifs on their dial that let you give both concepts at once. Others also have heart motifs. You may want to look at those, or even better, just a beautiful swirl or hand-guilloché pattern on the dial that adds depth and dimension (much like that woman in your life has).

Think about her hobbies. Is she active and sports involved? A chronograph might be the right watch. Is she a business woman, busy traveling the world? Perhaps a dual timer or world timer watch would be a good pick. Does she like things simple and uncomplicated? Maybe a three-hands watch with date? Is she a hopeless romantic? Then you have to go with a moon phase watch.

Still not sure? Stop into our store any time in the coming week and we would be happy to help you find the watch that suits your message, your budget and your loved one. We can even send you on your way with a gift-wrapped box.

Palm Beach Named One of Forbes Top 18 Destinations to Visit in 2018

HJ Worth Ave at Night Palm Beach Lately Feature We love being in Palm Beach.  Read below why Forbes thinks it’s one of the Top 18 places you should go in 2018!  Other destinations that made the list include Sydney and Buenos Aires.

Palm Beach County, made up of 39 cities and towns, draws you in with 47 miles of sand. But there are plenty of reasons to head inland. The Norton Museum of Art is undergoing an expansion. The Warehouse District is becoming a culinary haven with the newly opened Grandview Public Market, a food hall operated by Top Chef alum Dale Talde’s Three Kings Restaurant Group.

The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches debuted in 2017 and provides the spring training home for the Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros. Watch out for surf veteran Kelly Slater’s 80-acre wave park to open in 2019. The unnamed attraction will include a 2,000-foot-long artificial lake that produces man-made waves and a surf school.

It’s now easier than ever to reach the Palm Beaches, too — intercity express train the Brightline began 30-minute rides to Fort Lauderdale in January. In the coming months, you will be able to travel to downtown Miami in an hour, and eventually to Orlando International Airport in two hours.

What Do You Know About Amethyst, the February Birthstone?

JMGEA2121_0

14k 5mm February Birthstone, Amethyst Stud Earrings

Amethyst, the gemstone believed by ancient Greeks and Romans to ward off the intoxicating powers of Bacchus, also was said to keep the wearer clear-headed and quick-witted. Throughout history, the gemstone has been associated with many myths, legends, religions, and numerous cultures. English regalia were even decorated with amethysts during the Middle Ages to symbolize royalty. Amethyst jewelry has been found and dated as early as 2000 BC.

And did you know that the February birthstone was connected with Valentine’s Day? Some historical accounts say that Saint Valentine had an amethyst ring carved with an image of Cupid.

For many years, amethyst was held to be one of the most precious gemstones, often favored by royalty or exclusively by the clergy as a symbol for the diety of Christ. It was even held for many years in the same regard as the diamond. It wasn’t until the discovery of more abundant supplies of amethyst that it became a gemstone enjoyed by more than just the wealthiest buyers.

Many wearers of amethyst throughout history and even today prize the gem for its symbolism as well as its beauty. Leonard da Vinci once said that amethyst helps to quicken intelligence and get rid of evil thoughts. Other qualities like peace, stability, courage and strength are said to be derived from this gemstone.

Today, many wearers simply prize the amethyst for its beautiful shade and the way it complements both warm and cool colors.  Shop Amethyst pieces on our website or in store today!
